Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents
-a geyser on the seafloor that spews out hot water from the lava from within the earths crust.  The water is mineral rich, mineral-rich water can aid the support a diverse community of organisms.  The vents create chimneys that are able to grow up to 35ft tall.  The water in the chimneys has been measured to reach as high as 750 degrees fahrenheit. Fish, tube worms  eyeless shrimp, crabs, and clams are some of the organisms that harvest off the bacteria from the vents.  Plants can live in the dark at the bottom of the seafloor because of chemosynthesis. The vents are located where the earths crust is separating.

Alvin
- the machine that is highly adaptable to do the research at extreme depths and pressure.  It was used to discover the hydrothermal vents.

Holger Jannasch and Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab
- Holger Jannasch was a marine microbiologist that contributed a great deal to the study of microbial life in the extreme environment of the deep-sea. His main interests were the growth of microorganisms in the sea, and their existence of at the low temperature and high pressure of the ocean depths, and the microbial processes taking place at hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. Jannasch discovered hydrothermal vents.

Topography

Sunflower and Money Seed Lab

Week 1
The plants sat on the desk infront of the window. The sunflower plant and Money seed both received a bottle cap of water per day. Neither Plants sprouted.

Week 2
The plants remained on the desk infront of the window. The plants received a bottle cap of water every other day. The sunflower sprouted and broke the surface of the soil. The money seed did not sprout

Week 3
The plants were kept in the same spot and received the same amount of water. The sunflower seed grew and no stands above the soil. The money seed did not sprout and is presumed to be dead.

Week 4
The sunflower seed's stem bent and the plant is laying down and is turning brown. The money seed showed no sigh of life. Both plants are presumed to be dead.

Week 5
The plants are dead.

The Sun in the Sky

Our latest assignment involved the tracking of progress of the sun across the sky. We used a permanent pole in the parking lot and took and recorded measurements of the length of the poles shadow 4 times a day. Using the length of the pole which was 39 3/4 inches and the length of the shadow, we used the formula Tangent=opposite/adjacent to determine the angle in which the sun was in the sky. Also we were able to figure out what direction the sun was using a compass.

10:15 AM - Length of shadow 54 inches, angle of sun 74 degrees in NE sky
1:30 PM - Length of shadow 24 1/4 inches, angle of sun 164 degrees in SE sky
3:15 PM - Length of shadow 32 inches, angle of sun 124 degrees in NW sky
5:00 PM - Length of shadow 77 inches, angle of sun 52 degrees in NW sky

Flood of 1994

In 1994, there was an enormous flood from the Okmulgee River in Macon. Downtown suffered damages to many businesses. Not only were businesses damaged, but the flood filled the drinking water  facility with clay. This resulted in the city of Macon being with no water for almost 3 weeks. Highway 16 had a great deal to do with this. On one side there was a levi and the other highway 16. This left no room for the water to spread out creating a bottle neck, sending water throughout downtown Macon.

The Perfect Storm

In class we watched the Perfect Storm. A group of fishermen had a disappointing trip in which they barely caught any fish. When they returned home the captain of the ship decided to go out on one last trip. He took the crew to the Flemish Cap. This was a longer trip than the crew was ready for. Out in the middle of the ocean with a huge catch, their refrigerating system broke. This left the captain and his crew with a decision. Lose the catch of a lifetime or sail straight into the middle of three hurricanes. The crew let money cloud their minds and took the chance of sailing through the storm. After they realized they would not make it through the storm they turned around. After turning around, the ship capsized and sank taking the whole crew with her.
